![]() ![]() OXENFREE II picking up five years after the original game’s events, the player may be surprised by how little OXENFREE II is concerned with dredging up the past.Īllowing the sequel to explore new characters and a more extensive setting allows OXENFREE II to stand on its own right rather than being a conventional sequel. Rather than directly continuing Alex’s journey in the original, the player meets newcomer Riley, who has taken a summer job in her coastal hometown of Camena. If you had played the original Oxenfree, you’d have more insight into what is happening and pick-up nods to past events, but it is absolutely not required. Color me surprised when I discovered that OXENFREE II: Lost Signals is largely a standalone sequel crafting a wholly new story that doesn’t require the original to play. And as studios emphasize building franchises, sequels that are an immediate continuation of what came before it is almost entirely the industry’s standard approach. Sequels that co-exist within an established game world but can be enjoyed on their own. ![]() The concept of a standalone sequel feels like a relic of a bygone era. there will come a point where the Anomaly makes its presence known, requiring you to act fast to save your base. You can detect the Anomaly’s presence via monitoring seismic activity. The Anomaly lurks in the darkness of the deep, away from the safety lights of your base. Namely, you’ll be having to keep what’s known as the Anomaly at bay. In addition to releasing Surviving The Abyss in Early Access, the devs have provided a handy guide to setting up your base and managing its crew, as well as detailing some of the dangers you’ll be encountering. Along with discovering and mining resources, you must also explore and expand into the murky depths in order to further your research. As such, you’ll be having to maintain the facility’s oxygen, power, food supplies, along with keeping your crew alive and sane. You have been tasked to build and oversee a deep sea research facility with the aim of perfecting (and weaponizing) human cloning. Surviving The Abyss puts you in 1976 during the Cold War. As an incentive, you can pick up the game with a 10% discount from now until January 24th. Announced back in November, Paradox Arc and developer Rocket Flair Studios’ underwater survival game Surviving The Abyss is now out in Early Access on Steam. ![]()
